Tongue-Tie Wexford is a rapid access clinic for infants from birth to one year approximately, with a tongue-tie and feeding difficulties.
The service is led by Prof. Azam, Consultant Paediatrician who offers an assessment and division of the tongue-tie, if required, during the same out-patient visit. This service is also supported by an onsite Lactation Consultant who provides immediate post-frenotomy care, feeding advice and assistance.
What is Tongue-Tie?
Tongue-tie, formally known as ankyloglossia, is a condition where there is a restrictive band of tissue connecting the tip of the tongue or an area nearby to the floor of the mouth. In simpler terms, this band of tissue divides the space beneath the tongue into two compartments.
In newborns with anterior tongue-tie, this band is visibly apparent and can affect movements of the tongue, potentially leading to difficulties with feeding or speaking. Additionally, in some cases, newborns may have posterior tongue-tie, where the restriction is further back on the tongue, potentially causing similar challenges with feeding or swallowing despite the ability to protrude the tongue past the gums.
Tongue-Tie Division
Tongue-tie division involves cutting the short, tight piece of skin connecting the underside of the tongue to the bottom of the mouth. It's a quick, simple and almost painless procedure that usually improves feeding straight away.
How common is Tongue-Tie?
Reports on its frequency vary from between one in every 10 babies born, to one in every 20 babies born. It appears to be more common in boys and there also appears to be a hereditary element.
Here at the Tongue-Tie Wexford clinic we take pride in performing tongue tie release only when it is clinically indicated. A detailed history will we be taken to ensure that a frenotomy is worthwhile for your baby. For the best results you should also see your lactation consultant after the procedure if breastfeeding so help in adjusting breast feeding is given.

Our daughter had tongue tie which prevented her from breastfeeding. She was reviewed by Prof Azam and Aileen, the lactation consultant and they scheduled her in for her tongue tie release. We noticed an improvement within hours and she is breastfeeding exclusively since.
We are delighted with her progress and very grateful to have had access to this service in Wexford in such a timely manner and we found both Prof Azam and Aileen’s care excellent and highly professional.
